この度、光栄ながら米国サンフランシスコで開催されたACP Internal Medicine Meeting 2026に参加する機会をいただきました。自身にとっては初めての海外学会であり、渡航前は少なからず緊張を覚えておりましたが、現地は気候にも恵まれ、非常に快適な環境のもとで学会に臨むことができました。会場全体の雰囲気は活気に満ち、参加者同士の交流も極めてフランクであり、想像以上に充実した時間を過ごすことができました。
今回は日本代表として、Doctor’s Dilemmaに出場する機会をいただきました。しかしながら、ネイティブスピーカー同士による早押しの応酬に十分についていくことができず、幾度かボタンを押したものの回答権を得ることが叶わず、敗退という結果に終わってしまいました。実力不足を痛感するとともに、非常に悔いの残る結果となりましたが、同時に米国内外から参加する海外勢のレベルの高さを改めて肌で感じる貴重な機会ともなりました。臨床知識の深さと瞬発力の両面において、国際的な水準の一端に触れることができたと考えております。
コンペティション以外にも複数の教育セッションに参加いたしましたが、いずれも極めて教育的かつ実践的な内容でした。とりわけGoals of Careに関するセッションは印象深く、米国の臨床現場において当該テーマがどのように議論・実施されているのかを、ロールプレイを交えた実演形式で学ぶことができ、大変勉強になりました。本邦におけるコミュニケーションとの差異を具体的に理解する上でも、有意義な学びを得ることができたと考えております。
また、ACP日本支部主催のレセプション等にも参加する機会に恵まれました。会場には日本国外在住の日本人参加者に加え、海外からの参加者も多数来場されており、多様なバックグラウンドを有する先生方と直接交流できたことは、本学会における大きな収穫の一つであったと感じております。
学会の合間には、サンフランシスコ市内の観光も楽しむことができました。特にウォーターフロントのアシカの迫力は強く印象に残っており、また現地のハンバーガーをいくつも堪能できたことも、滞在中の良き思い出となりました。
総じて、ACP 2026への参加は非常に実り多い経験となりました。一方で、自身の英会話力の不足を痛感する場面も多く、今後は継続的に英語学習に取り組んでまいりたいと考えております。今回のような機会が再び訪れた際には、より成長した状態で是非とも再挑戦したいと強く感じております。

I had the privilege of attending the American College of Physicians (ACP) Internal Medicine Meeting 2026, held in San Francisco. As my first international academic conference, the experience proved to be both professionally enlightening and personally memorable. The weather in San Francisco during the meeting was pleasant throughout, which contributed to an excellent overall environment for the conference. Although I felt considerable nervousness prior to attending, the atmosphere was remarkably vibrant, open, and collegial, and I ultimately enjoyed every aspect of my participation.
I had the honor of serving as a member of the Japanese delegation in the Doctor’s Dilemma competition. Unfortunately, I was unable to keep pace with the rapid buzzer responses of the native English-speaking teams. Although I did press the buzzer on several occasions, I was unable to secure the opportunity to answer, and our team was eliminated earlier than I had hoped. The experience was genuinely disappointing, yet it served as a powerful reminder of the exceptionally high caliber of physicians from the United States and other countries. I came away with a renewed appreciation for the depth of clinical knowledge and the rapid recall abilities demonstrated by the international participants.
Beyond the competition, I attended several educational sessions, all of which were of remarkably high quality. The session on Goals of Care was particularly instructive. The faculty demonstrated, through live role-play, how such discussions are conducted within the American clinical context. Observing these authentic interactions provided invaluable insight into communication strategies that differ considerably from those commonly employed in Japan.
I also attended the ACP Japan Chapter Reception, which proved to be an exceptional networking opportunity. In addition to colleagues from Japan, the reception was attended by Japanese participants residing outside Japan as well as physicians from other countries, and I was able to engage in meaningful exchanges with a wide range of attendees.
Outside of the academic program, I also had the opportunity to explore San Francisco. The sea lions at the waterfront left a particularly strong impression with their scale and vitality, and I greatly enjoyed sampling several excellent hamburgers during my stay.
In summary, attending ACP 2026 was an extraordinarily valuable experience. At the same time, the meeting made me acutely aware of my limitations in English speaking and listening abilities. I intend to continue studying English on an ongoing basis, and should a similar opportunity arise in the future, I would be eager to participate once again.
